Task 08 - Open Task

Produce a minimum of 3 entirely self-directed works. There are no constraints, but you should note that it is expected that your work will demonstrate;

1) attention to exploring material properties.

2) application of revision in the development of the work.

My Initial Ideas / Approaches.

  • I wanted to take my material of choice which was the Kraft paper which I had used in my previous experiments for my other open work in Task 7.

  • I wanted to take a material that was used as the surface material for Task 7 and attempt taking the material from its 2D properties and into a 3D sculptural form.

  • I wanted to the work to explore a gradient of change from the 2D, gradually being folded or morphed as it becomes less and less like its original form.

  • I also wanted the Work to be installed vertically upon the surface of a wall, hanging and defending down as it reaches the floor and ventures out upon the gallery space. Taking the work of the wall as if it is almost alive and coming out from its origin.

How I Developed This into My Final Work.

  • I started this work by Cutting a few scrap pieces of the Kraft paper and made some practice attempts to experiment with moulding the paper the way I wanted.

  • I identified using water gave the paper a softer quality when wet and allowed me to manipulate it with ease. I also found adding a small quantity of black acrylic paint to the water and mixing in a spray bottle gave for better control of the water and adds a a reference to my use of charcoal in previous works.

  • Then starting the final piece I gathered over 10 meters of the Kraft paper from the studio supply and made sure to cut exact horizontal cuts at both ends.

  • The I identified each end of the roll of Kraft paper and made marks to show which end would be the flat end end which would be

What Went Well?

  • I found that through experimenting with the Kraft paper prior to engaging in the final work gave for more understanding of the materials qualities and capabilities and made for more informed making process.

  • The overall composition of the piece has very bold and dynamic qualities as hill and valley like forms of the manipulated material journey down the surface of the gallery wall.

  • The piece captures the light at its high points and gradually descends into its degraded and deteriated end as if to show age and use throughout a passage of time.

What Could Be Improved?

  • I Believe that If I was to explore this work again I would take into consideration the storage capabilities needed for a piece such as this. It is quite large and does not make for easy handling, requiring a minimum of 2-3 people to move safely.

  • I think when it came to the application of the acrylic paint in the water sprayed onto the paper, I could have added more as the final result after drying faded and was too fair in contrast to its colour when wet.

  • In my original vision of this work I was picturing something more dramatic in its folds and the length its would extrude of the the wall. I was still quite happy with the finishing product especially considering my practice attempts were on paper 1/10 the final size of the final work.

Where Could I Go From Here?

  • I believe there is potential in a work such as this and it can be explored in in different sizes and even incorporating different paper materials such as clear white paper might give emphasis to the pigment of the acrylic paint added to the water spray bottle.
