Task 07 - Open Task
Produce a minimum of 3 entirely self-directed works. There are no constraints, but you should note that it is expected that your work will demonstrate;
1) attention to exploring material properties.
2) application of revision in the development of the work.

My Initial Ideas / Approaches.
-
My initial response to this open task was to explore my experiences with materiality throughout the entire semester and apply the knowledge and experience into the process and making of the artwork.
-
I started by identifying my key material - I chose Kraft paper that was supplied in the studio on a large continuous role, this would be the base for this my work.
-
visually for the work I wanted to explore the qualities of fabrics and their materiality as they are wrapped or draped over forms to accentuate and also cover up.
How I Developed This into My Final Work.
-
I Started by gathering reference images from Pinterest and compiled a mood board.
-
Then I wanted to start by practicing with the pastels, so I used offcuts of the material so I could understand and explore the qualities of outcome before beginning my final work.
-
Taking advantage of the excess in material I cut a role of 3 meters of the Kraft paper and then I install it horizontally on a wall to be worked on.
-
I developed a draft of the final composition using Procreate to then after installing upon a wall, to have the work projected onto the canvas's surface to sketch out the design.
-
After I had played down a base using light pastels, I then removed the projection and started using pastels and oil sticks to start working on the details.

What Went Well?
-
The overall work has a presence when installed upon a white wall, with the A symmetry of the composition brings a sense of dynamic movement and depth amongst the posed bodies.
-
The way in which the fabric is wrapped and draped upon the figures adds to the movement of the piece, whilst also being used to censor and cover the intimate anatomy of the male figures.

What Could Be Improved?
-
I Identified that During the early stages of the making process that the required space needed to install and work on this piece was fairly limited at the studio, and transporting a work of this size would prove difficult. There probably was a lack in foresight on my part regarding the use of certain spaces within the studio.
-
I Think also my early intention for the work was to have an almost photo realistic representation, as this is typical for myself and the work I produce. This applied pressure on me and resulted in me overworking the figures to be realistic, instead the attention should have been applied to the detail of the fabric.

Where Could I Go From Here?
-
I would really like to explore this work further and look at more improved and thought out methods of installing or framing the work. Even going further to install both open task works together into a gallery space.
-
I also wish to explore working on a scale such as this in the future for more of my works, as a larger work in a gallery has a strong presence and impact on the space.
