Task 03 - Image to Sound
Return to your THREE-HOUR ARTWORK and create a 1-minute sound work that is derived from the materials you used, exploring sounds that evoke the qualities of the material.

'Sounds of Creation', (2024)
Materials - Sound Recordings of Charcoal and paper
Length - 1 minute

My Initial Ideas / Approaches.
-
Take the materials I had used during my three hour artwork session and develop recordings, material such as: Charcoal, Paper, Brushes, Painters Tape and even ambient noises around at the time like air-conditioning.
-
Create at minimum 10 to 12 unique recordings and import them into a music generating app on my iPad.
-
Make a response to create a minute sound recording was to engage with my response to TASK 1 and try emulate or express a similar composition within the sound piece.
-
Creating a symbolic representation of time spent over the three hours of TASK 1 and the sounds representing key moments and material uses throughout, such as tape being stretched to line the page with a border. Including the use of charcoal sticks with strong bold defined stroke notes contrasted to the soft sweeping tones generated by a Brush.
How I Developed This into My Final Work.
-
I started by gathering materials used in TASK 1 and spent an hour or two recording sounds onto my iPad, labelling and storing them in a folder to be imported into a Music making app.
-
After importing the recordings I wanted to lay a base tone to be consistently played in the background of the song, representing the ambient noises within my surroundings. Here I chose to use my recordings of my air-conditioning unit as it is typically symbolic of most everyday domestic living during times of summer.
-
Next came importing the more emblematic recordings which will be put into the piece as three seperate intervals, noting the stages of Preparation, Making, and Completion.
-
Starting with Preparation, I implement recordings of the pulling of tape indicating the use of tape to create a clean edge border for the work. This is a common practice I like to do as it gives the piece a clean and polished look, contrasted to the chaotic monochromatic work trapped within the confines of the crisp white border.
-
Next comes the recordings of the main material used in the Making stage of the work, CHARCOAL, which I would use multiple different recordings. Recordings of falling broken up charcoal onto paper, repetitive and rhythmic scratching or charcoal sticks and even the rubbing of charcoal between two pieced of paper. Each with their own distinct sounds.
-
Finally the piece is concluded with recordings of the blending of charcoal with brushes and then the sound of the paper being removed from the easel as a sound symbolic of completion.

What Went Well?
-
I found that by identifying key materials used in TASK 1 and having them be only a few gave for not only enough variety in sounds to record but also a uniquely fun exploration across different methods used to create recordings.
-
I haven't explored sound creating and more digital forms of art making much in the past so was apprehensive in the beginning, after experimenting with a few early attempts I slowly found myself becoming more confident in using the application and formulating my final piece.
-
The overall story and composition of my final sound piece I believe is referential of TASK 1 in the narrative of the application of sounds and ties well into the concept and topic of materiality throughout the use of recordings.

What Could Be Improved?
-
I would probably say that improvement could come from more understanding and learning of sound recording and Music making applications, especially not relying on cheap free apps as my first choice. Options available to edit and manipulate my recordings were very limited and required a lot of trial and error.
-
As above would indicate my understanding of technology could be improved on also.
-
I Think in future it may also benefit the final product to invest in borrowing some recording tools and equipment as it would provide and produce clearer audio material.

Where Could I Go From Here?
-
I believe the next steps I should take would be looking at ways in which to incorporate this sound work along side either a video or film recording and have them work in tandem with each other, further exploring technological applications and explorations of materiality through visual media.
-
Furthermore I could also look into looping back to TASK 1 and the Timelapse recording I produced over the 3 hours and lay the audio over and see how the two pieces work together.
